Sofia's Cafe - Pre-Game

Upon realizing that we still had a few hours until our match began, we decided to do what most football fans, or really, most people, would do. Head to a pub to warm ourselves with some heat and some drinks in preparation for standing in the 40 degree (F) open-air stadium. Along the Fan Mile, we encountered all sorts of people in various national get-ups. When we saw what could have possibly been the Chilean team's managers in a little restaurant/bar on the street, we headed straight in! Now whether they were enthusiastic fans with matching get-ups, or people actually associated with the team, we still have no idea. However, Dave clearly is invigorated by the fan spirit as he reps South Africa with his new windbreaker! (above)

We merrily had some Peroni beer and a glass of scotch to warm ourselves up while watching the end of the Japan v. Cameroun game. We had originally asked or hostess for a classic "South African" drink, but unfortunately it included cream, which would have made my poor lactose-intolerant stomach cry, so scotch it was.

For the first time since getting to South Africa, we encountered some other American fans. Go USA!!!

Even before our first match bagan, we were having a blast, having some beers and catching up! I am so glad we made this happen, five years after we all graduated high school and literally dispersed across the globe for first college, then for jobs; we all met back together in South Africa for a month of revelry and soccer!
