The Fan Mile

Fran and David posing in front of all of our tickets. We have three games, one each week. The first game was on the 14th, Italy vs. Paraguay. We travelled from Muizenberg to Cape Town by metro and then walked the "fan mile" to Green Point Stadium.

The fan mile was lined with flags and filled with face-painted fans. It was a rather brisk rainy day so we dress warm and waterproff, and made sure to get our blood pumping beforehand.

Kyle and Nathaniel did a quick "Body by Teichman" workout before hopping on the train. The metro train was packed, but we quickly discovered that the cars were split into two classes: first and third. When were getting on the train, a man gestured for us to get on another car. We didn't know why and we boarded the same car anyway. It immediately became apparent that there were two classes of car and that non-black people do not usually ride the car we were on. In fact, after looking at our tickets again we discovered that we had been sold Metro Plus tickets without even being asked. The car ahead of us was practically empty compared to the car we were in and the passengers were of all races. As the cars filled up we moved to the MetroPlus car. It was an interesting thing to experience and something that we are still talking about and trying to understand.

We arrived at Cape Town Station to the sound of vuvuzelas and fan-gear venders. We followed the fan mile and took pictures along the way. Kyle and David were joined by an excited Brazil fan in one photo (neither of them knew he was there). We browsed all kinds of World Cup fan gear, including team hard hats!
We ended up at a crowded tapas bar, Sofia's Cafe.
